FAQS - Kiruna Travel Guide

Thinking of visiting Kiruna?
Located above the Arctic Circle in the far north of Sweden, Kiruna is one of the best places to see the Northern Lights. It’s a great spot for all kinds of Arctic experiences—from exploring the famous Icehotel to visiting Abisko National Park, known for its clear skies and stunning scenery.

Here are some of the most common questions to help you plan your trip.

Kiruna is going through one of the most unique changes in Sweden—a big part of the town is literally being moved. Because of ground shifts caused by decades of mining, the city center is being relocated a few kilometers east. The goal is to keep Kiruna’s special character alive while making sure the town stays safe and sustainable for the future.

Getting to Kiruna is simple, with a few great options depending on where you’re coming from.

If you’re already in Sweden, you can take a scenic overnight train from Stockholm—relax, sleep, and wake up in the Arctic. Or, if you’d rather get there quickly, there are direct flights from Stockholm to Kiruna that take just 90 minutes.

Coming from outside Sweden? The easiest way is to fly into Stockholm and catch a connecting flight to Kiruna. There are also seasonal direct flights from Copenhagen, Düsseldorf and Paris, depending on the time of year.

The Northern Lights season in Kiruna runs from the first week of September until the first week of April. These months offer long, dark nights and good chances of clear skies—perfect for aurora hunting.

The Aurora Borealis is a natural phenomenon that can be observed in both Abisko and Kiruna. The northern lights look similar in Abisko and Kiruna due to their close proximity and similar latitudes.

Abisko is known for its clear skies and low light pollution, making it an excellent location for viewing the Northern Lights. It also has a unique microclimate that tends to have less cloud cover than other areas in the region, which can increase your chances of seeing the aurora.

Kiruna is another popular location for aurora viewing, and it has a range of accommodation options and activities for visitors. While it can be more crowded than Abisko, it also has a wider range of services and amenities available.

Ultimately, both Abisko and Kiruna offer excellent opportunities for viewing the Northern Lights, and which one is “better” depends on your personal preferences and priorities.

The night of your tour, Lights of Vikings Team will always take you to the best given location to maximize your chances of seeing the Aurora, far from crowds and light pollution.

We’ll always do our best to find clear skies—even if it means driving long distances. Our guides check weather forecast and aurora activity all day to give you the best chance possible. That said, the Northern Lights are a natural phenomenon, so they can never be guaranteed.

When visiting Kiruna’s Arctic conditions, packing the right gear makes all the difference. The key is to dress in layers to stay warm and comfortable throughout the day.

Start with thermal underwear, wool socks, and a good base layer. Add a warm sweater or fleece, and top it off with a proper winter coat. Don’t forget essentials like a hat, scarf, gloves, and waterproof boots—the wind and snow can be intense!

For all outdoor activities included in our package, we provide thermal overalls and winter boots to keep you warm and protected.

Temperatures vary depending on the month. On average:

  • September: between 0°C and +10°C (milder and no snow yet)

  • December: between -10°C and -25°C (coldest, but beautiful snowy landscapes)

  • March: between -5°C and -15°C (still winter, but with more daylight)

Don’t worry—we provide thermal overalls and boots to keep you warm during all activities

Yes, we strongly recommend it. Travel insurance gives you peace of mind in case of delays, cancellations, illness, or lost luggage—especially when traveling to remote Arctic areas.

The main difference is the activities.

  • In autumn (Sept–Dec): there’s no snow yet, so we include dog karting.

  • In winter (Dec–April): you’ll enjoy a snowmobile tour through frozen lakes and snowy forests.
Both seasons offer Northern Lights, just with different Arctic experiences!

We recommend 4 nights—it gives you the best chance of seeing the Northern Lights while also enjoying daytime activities.
In fact, all our 4-night package guests have seen the aurora so far!

We accept a minimum of 2 and a maximum of 8 people per group, so you’ll have a personal and flexible experience, with your own guide from start to finish.

The starting time depends on the weather and the solar activity. Our team checks conditions all day and will decide when to leave based on where the clear skies are. Since this is a private tour, we can also adjust the timing and duration according to your group’s preferences.
